Letter from the Incubator Manager
Greetings,
We have been busy behind the scenes at 4W Circle. This past month we embarked on renovating the space and we are still in the process. Many of you have lived through our periodic painting and sprucing up of 4W Circle, but it has always been some shade of white paint. This time we painted color and it has created many comments and emotions!!
How did it all come about? For the past two years we have offered an interior design seminar facilitated by Cynthia Dennard. I have known Cynthia since 1998 when we both participated at the Harlem Show House and subsequently we participated at the Bed-Stuy Show House on Hancock Street. Cynthia has been asking to redesign the store since I met her and she was always talking about color and I would say no. Fast-forward and we get new and younger business owners and they feel the store needs a facelift. After much thought, I said okay and referred Cynthia, an interior designer who was eager to do a makeover. Cynthia created a brilliant plan (see her design concept), which has since increased awareness of the mission of 4W Circle.
What a transformation! The colors are red and yellow gold and if it were just that it would be spectacular. People have asked who did the lighting and who selected the fans--folks they are the same lights and fans that were installed after the fire in 1996--10 years ago!! But because of the color they are visible and are enhanced by the color. The new layout of businesses counteracts the spirit of individuality and draws the focus back to the artistry of the products. In keeping with the concept of African Commerce and shopping, Bonnie Sandy Sterling (see her marketing strategies for 4W Circle) recommended pulling merchandise to the center so that customers would need to circulate. While the current fixtures need modification the concept works and customers who have come really get the concept of seeing all of the businesses in the store instead of focusing on one or two. So walking around the circle or oval has given them a new view of the store, but a reaffirmation of the purpose of the store.
The walls are now set up with little venues and the rear of the store will be used for events and a gallery space: Red Gallery @ 4W Circle. We are seeking visual and wearable artists for exhibits and trunk shows at Red Gallery. Please contact us for additional information.
Some customer comments: "It's warm and inviting", "It looks like a real store now", "I love it", " I had no idea it was this big!" "I can appreciate the product now, because I can see it"
But the physical changes are just a minor part of what's new at 4W Circle. We are also revamping our marketing strategy, our program offerings and reexamining the selection process of program participants. Customers know us for unique hand-made visual and wearable art. In recent years we have added participants who are not artists and we need to refocus and continue the mission of 4W Circle, which is to introduce emerging artists to the community. We have a team of consultants volunteering their services to 4W Circle to make the changes. We want to thank Bonnie Sandy Sterling of Creative Independent Strategies Program who has designed marketing programs specifically for artist and creative businesses and Kaz Mitchell of Kaz Management who will be working with existing affiliates to implement new systems that make the retail operations run efficiently and prepare them for their own establishment in the future. The team’s focus is creating an environment that gives quality customer service to visitors of our incubator and gallery @ 4W Circle.
Having this support team allows me, as incubator manager, the opportunity to recruit new artists to 4W Circle, focus on the mission of 4W Circle to assist artists in creating economic stability, raise funds for the support of our program, advocate for artists, upgrade our technology, and plan for the future of our program, which includes looking for a building.
For those of you who are just realizing our mission and purpose, 4W Circle of Art & Enterprise, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization under New York State law and while awaiting the federal application process, we have a fiscal sponsor: People of Faith Network. 4W Circle made the decision to become a not-for-profit organization because of the work we have been doing: an artist incubator that has been providing space and services to small businesses as a stepping-stone to establishing their own storefront. After 15 years in the Fort Greene community, we evaluated our commitment to small businesses and realized we were offering a service that is hard to find elsewhere and it needs funding to continue. We will be seeking public funds but we also are asking for your support, as a customer who wants to see us remain in the community. Donations are needed for the training program, for technology upgrade, for special needs of artist disciplines and general support. During the two weeks that we were closed many people were worried that we were not coming back and even now that we have reopened the new look makes people think there is a ‘new store’. We want to continue being of service to you in this community and to ensure our continuation, please make your donation today! You may make a contribution to 4W Circle by making a check out to People of Faith Network with 4W Circle in the memo line and send to: 4W Circle, 704 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217.
Thank you for your continued support as we begin a new phase in support of small businesses.

Incense
The burning of incense is a long-standing tradition throughout many cultures and civilizations. We burn incense to clear the air, set a mood, release negativity, and alter our consciousness. The scents are not only pleasing but can affect real change in our mood and environment. I often use incense while mediating or performing rituals, choosing the fragrance carefully to assist me with my intention. Lavender can be soothing, relaxing and freeing. It is strengthening and assists our ability to dream. Rosemary is clearing and helpful and aids in focus. Sage and Cedar are cleansing and purifying. Jasmine and Rose are mood lifters, sensual they open our hearts to joy. Ginger helps to relieve stress quiets the stomach and is supportive of good health. Peppermint revitalizes and energizes supports digestion and overall health. Frankincense, Cedar, Sandalwood and Aloeswood are great for prayer and opening to spirit. So, whether you are planning to sit quietly at home and mediate or have company over for an evening of joy and celebration, incense can be a wonderful tool to include.
I have spent a great deal time searching for an incense that is both evoking, long lasting, light, and gentle enough to use at anytime. Upon finding it, I literally jump up and down. I am pleased to be able to offer such an incense. Come visit Lelia and Andrea at 4W Circle and experience the joy that so many of our customers have while using these incense.

Behind the Scenes Strategizing Change
We've got a new attitude; repositioning 4W Circle
Numbers may make us uncomfortable, but it is only in the "numbers" that we can judge the success of our enterprises. It is my responsibility to double and even triple those numbers. Keeping businesses that serve the community and more specifically creative entrepreneurs, is important to many of us! Unfortunately it takes much more than words, regardless of how supportive everyone else is, the creative business person has to have a strong product, as well as business plan and also a well thought out plan of how to get that to the right consumer! At the end of the day success is measured by the numbers! All of this is an enormous undertaking. I am pleased to bring my knowledge as an artist, my experience as a business person and my program the Creative Independent Strategies™ to the 4W Circle Family.
It takes more than good intent however to achieve success! The change at 4W Circle is much more than the excellent use of color. Every aspect of its operation was examined with the intent of providing the best strategy that would ensure 4W Circle would be around another 15 years, to service its two main constituents, creative entrepreneurs and the community they serve! My role was not simply devising an overall plan but specifically ensuring that all aspects integrate under 4W Circle's mission, vision and goals. The changes have created the desired effect! Within the next year we will be bringing to you the most talented creative products, artists, writers, and designers. It will be my pleasure to challenge them to expand their vision of their creative business and triple their business within the next year!
Back to those numbers, 4W Circle has a lot of numbers to meet in order to retain our position. Here is how you can help:
First of all pass by and express your appreciation and needs or simply say hello!
Pass along this newsletter to all of your friends and make a date to attend our events!- We'd love to see you this Saturday. You can then stop by Sister's Awake Festival! I'll even help you plan a date with your friends at one of our events. Just Ask for Bonnie!
Shop and Buy-at the end of the day business is a profit and loss statement.
Shop, not just 4W Circle but allocating the larger portion of your spending money for purchases in the community, "keeps the money in the community"! If we don't have what you need, we can recommend you to other local artists or merchants who do!
Tell the Creative Entrepreneurs you know, our last orientation is Tuesday, October 10th 6-8pm
Volunteer; 4W Circle is looking For Volunteers, we are especially interested in Students who need to prepare for college acceptance!

Behind the scenes The new color scheme for 4WCircle of Art & Enterprise
By Cynthia Dennard, Inside Design
http://www.formassembly.com/forms/22180
4 W Circle of Art & Enterprise has long maintained a reputation as being an incubator for fledging businesses by designers of color. The products carried by the store have the distinction of being crafted / hand made by the artists who sell the product. From home décor furniture and decorative items to jewelry using natural, earthy stones with beaten metal accents to bath/body products that smell of grandma's home to greeting cards with specific African American images and sayings – all reflect a sense of culture and authenticity.
In order to modernize a store such as 4W Circle, you must consider the history behind the store; the neighborhood in which the store is located and the type of clientele that consistently shops at the store – your core market. My thinking was that the store needed to be updated and modernized in a way which celebrates its history, the consumer market it serves and the designers who are featured. For example, the design of the Prada store - stainless steel, black polished stone, glass and muted cool paint colors - is appropriate for that label: distinctly modern, (almost) sculptural clothes with a one of a kind appearance designed by a quietly contemporary, cutting edge designer located in an extremely high-end historically fashionable neighborhood which is known for individualism while being on the forefront of modernity surrounded by consumers who expect as much.
This type commercial design would not work for 4W Circle due to its crisp, almost cool, concept and feel. The design sense which is prevalent throughout the store (4W Circle) is one of an intimate, ethnically rich, creatively diverse environment. The key phrases for me during the re-design were "black design style", "warm", "nurturing environment", "diverse, artistic neighborhood" which referenced colors which were warm, rich and contemporary: muted, rich reds; deeply hued golden yellows; muted, soft browns. In addition, the store had not experienced any change in color for the past 15 years and the founder was smiling through gritted teeth. For one used to "shades of white", I did not want to be the cause of her early demise. It was also important that I provided a design that not only provided a rich backdrop for the merchandise in the store, but could withstand the test of time and was an environment the designers and founder could enjoy on a daily basis.
Please understand that change is difficult for those who are business owners, for those who are participants in that business and for those who are consumers of that business. But, one needs to live and breathe a redesign before coming to appreciate and understand the necessity for change.
